Crystal announced today that its long-awaited, now-under-construction third ship has been named Crystal Serenity. The name surprises some people who anticipated the next Crystal sibling to have a music-related moniker (Crystal Adagio? Crystal Concerto?) but does reflect the times.
The 68,000-ton, 1,080-passenger Crystal Serenity -- the line’s largest ship -- is due for delivery in summer 2003 and is the first newbuild in a decade for the line. As such, the ship will feature a lot of contemporary amenities, from more verandahs (85 percent of all outside suites and staterooms will have them), more “penthouse” cabins with super-suites measuring 37 percent more room than those on the existing fleet, a boardroom-with-wine-cellar and an extra paddle tennis court. There will be a second pool -- of the indoor/outdoor variety -- and additional facilities for kids, such as the Fantasia children's playroom and Waves teen center.
Otherwise, the ship won’t offer too many unnerving surprises to the line’s notoriously loyal patrons. The Italian and Asian specialty restaurants will be replicated (though a sushi bar will be added), as will the (albeit expanded) Computer University @ Sea and popular gathering venues like the Palm Court and the Avenue Saloon.
