Infinity’s High Toll

October 11, 2001
Celebrity’s Infinity, which just finished its second trans-Panama-canal crossing and is now based in her winter home port of San Juan, is the heaviest ship ever to pass through the canal. The cost for the ship to pass through the Panama Canal is based on weight so Infinity, weighing in at about 90,000 tons, also wins the dubious honor of paying a record $200,000 toll. The ship, and it’s not hard to imagine why, only cruises through the Panama Canal twice a year on repositioning voyages between winters in the Caribbean and summers in Alaska. Next passage is in April.
