One crewman has died and another is in hospital after becoming trapped in the hull of Saga Holidays' Saga Rose. The BBC reported that emergency services were called to the scene in Southampton's port earlier today after two men became trapped in the ship's ballast tanks. The ballast is a compartment within the ship, below the hull, that holds water.
One of the crewmen was pulled to safety by fire crews. The other man lost consciousness and tragically died at the scene. It is unclear as to why the two men were inside this area of the 24,474-ton, 587-passenger ship.
The traditional British ship had been due to leave for its latest cruise, a 14-night Baltic cruise late Wednesday afternoon U.K. time. The cruise departure has been delayed; Saga did not have information tonight on when the cruise would set sail. In the meantime, passengers have boarded the ship.
Saga confirmed that a full investigation is underway and was unable to comment any further. Stay tuned for more.
