Smugglers Caught on Carnival Ship

July 23, 2001
Four passengers on Carnival’s Imagination were arrested last week for trying to smuggle $3 million worth of drugs into the U.S. The cruisers, all women ages ranging from 23 - 45, were snagged at the Port of Miami, where Imagination had returned following a western Caribbean cruise to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Customs officials had sent the women to a second checkpoint because they seemed nervous. That’s when investigators searched their luggage, finding packages of cocaine and heroin stuffed in various pairs of shoes. The women are being held at a federal detention center in Miami on $250,000 bond -- and that’s apiece, not total. The charge, if convicted, comes with a minimum sentence of ten years in prison.
