Spas at Sea Update

June 29, 2001
When Norwegian Cruise Lines trumpeted its new affiliation with Mandara Spa for shipboard operations, the move reflected one of the few true lines to offer a distinct spa experience (Silversea is another Mandara client). Everybody else, it would seem, goes with mega shipboard spa company Steiner Leisure, Ltd., a company as famous for its inappropriately timed sales tactics (during a massage, etc.) as the quality of its services. Alas, that distinction is retained no longer as Steiner, in an effort to continue dominating the cruise ship spa arena, has bought up 60 percent of Mandara.

In other spa news, Canyon Ranch, which had announced that it would build two ships, serving as floating spas, and then canceled their order at the shipyard, has said it may be close to making announcement a new partnership to build its vessels.
