Spirit of Nantucket Remains Grounded After Incident

November 9, 2007
(4:30 p.m.) -- The status of Cruise West's Spirit of Nantucket is still unknown. The ship's captain intentionally ran it aground yesterday off Virginia Beach after it struck something in the Intercoastal Waterway and began taking on water. All crew and passengers were safely evacuated yesterday with no reported injuries, and transported to a local hotel.

According to the most recent statement from the U.S. Coast Guard, dated November 8, the ship is currently aground in nine feet of water -- but in stable condition. The Coast Guard dispatched dewatering pumps via helicopter to assist in the removal of excess water from the ship.

A spokesman for the line tells us that additional information will be shared as soon as it is known; stay tuned to Cruise Critic for those updates.
