Marine Expeditions, the Toronto-based adventure cruise operator, has shut down. The company, which offered small-ship, learning-oriented cruises to exotic destinations like the Arctic and Antarctica, was born out of a troubled past -- the line was bought out by management a year ago when its then-company, World Cruise Company, went bankrupt. In a statement, the management of Marine Expeditions attributed Marine Expedition’s failure to “the lack of certainty over receiving this new investment prevented the company's in-house travel agency from booking new passengers, forcing the closure of the company.” Marine Expeditions is contacting customers who have made reservations (and deposits) on sailings. As with any cruise purchase booked and paid for via credit card, affected passengers should apply to their card for a refund.
