Empress of the North Runs Aground in Alaska

(6:30 p.m.) -- Majestic America Line has announced the cancellation of three sailings of Empress of the North. The paddlewheeler ran aground in Alaska on Monday, forcing the evacuation of passengers and crew.

At this time, the cruise line is still assessing the condition of the ship, but after an initial once-over three departures were axed to allow adequate time for repairs. The May 19, May 26 and June 2 sailings have been canceled.

Guests booked on affected sailings will be contacted by Majestic America and offered two options. The first is to move to another 2007 Alaska sailing on Empress of the North with reimbursement for related incidentals as well as a 25 percent future cruise credit. The second? Cancel for a full refund.

Stay tuned to Cruise Critic as we'll continue to post updates on this situation.
