Silversea Announces New Ship Order
At today's State of the Industry panel discussion on luxury cruising, Silversea's Amerigo Perasso, the company's new president, got to make the sexiest announcement of the day (actually one of the sexiest -- Oceania's Frank del Rio also dropped news that a ship order had been placed; we'll follow that up after Oceania's press conference tomorrow, in which del Rio promises to provide design details).

Indeed, as we predicted, the line has signed on the dotted, er, line with Italy's Fincantieri to build one 36,000-ton, 540-passenger ship. It is scheduled for delivery in late 2009.

While no juicy details on the ship's design or features were made available, it's clear that Silversea, in this new ship, is creating an evolutionary rather than revolutionary vessel. The line's first two: Silver Cloud and Silver Wind, measure 16,800 tons and carry 296 passengers. Its newer Silver Whisper and Silver Shadow notch the numbers up slightly; measuring 25,000 tons and carrying almost a hundred passengers more (actual number: 388). And this ship -- the line has an option for a second -- will be just a bit larger than the last; it will measure 36,000 tons and carry 540 passengers.
