Disney Opts to Base Magic in Western U.S. in Summer 2008
Disney, which is making waves this summer with its first-ever deployment of a ship in Europe, is in retreat mode for 2008. The line has just announced that Disney Magic will return to the West Coast in summer 2008. The ship had previously spent a season there in 2005.

Disney Magic, like the year-round Wonder, typically spends most of its time in the Caribbean and Bahamas, though the line has occasionally experimented with alternative itineraries. Beyond the news of 2008's West Coast summer season, the more recent announcement had been about this summer -- when the ship will transit to Europe. There, Disney Magic will feature a series of 10- and 11-night cruises to Spain, Italy and France. This year's Western Mediterranean voyages will begin (and end) with trans-Atlantic sailings.

After returning from Europe to the Caribbean in late summer 2007, the ship will resume its normal winter patterns (seven-night roundtrips from Port Canaveral alternating between the Eastern and Western Caribbean). On May 10 (and again in reverse on August 17), Disney Magic will depart from Port Canaveral for Los Angeles via a 15-night repositioning cruise.

It will begin its "summer" West Coast season with a May 25 -- note, once again, that we're talking about 2008 -- departure to Los Angeles via the Panama Canal. Once there, it will sail seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises, calling at pretty much the standard ports of call -- Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta -- and feature a couple of days at sea.
