Spirit Arrives in Miami

April 25, 2001
Carnival Spirit has arrived! The 88,000-ton, 2,214-passenger ship, Carnival's latest, docked in Miami on Tuesday and is undergoing all manner of inspections – Coast Guard, CDC – and finally tweaking before the big launch. That occurs on Friday, when Elizabeth Dole, Spirit's godmother, christens the ship. After that, there will be a two-day VIP preview cruise (for travel agents and media) and then Carnival Spirit will head off on regular sailings beginning Sunday, April 29. The official inaugural will be a 16-day Panama Canal cruise before the ship heads to Alaska for the summer.
