| More news on the Alaskan environmental issue: Governor Tony Knowles, who is committed to, at almost any length, preserving the state's tender environmental infrastructure from cruise ship hordes, has introduced new legislation. His plan to give the state more power to oversee cruise lines' environmental practices -- ranging from control of smokestack emissions to reviewing solid waste disposal practices -- will be funded by yet another Alaska passenger tax. Not a whopping amount, certainly, at $1 per passenger, but just another step in asking tourists, rather than cruise lines, to foot the bill for maintaining that state's fragile environment. | |
