HAL Announces New Ships
What’s a Zuiderdam? Well, according to Holland America, it, along with Oosterdam, is the name of one of the line’s two newest ships (in case you’re curious, the company defines these terms as “south and east” Œvista points of the compass).

These ships -- 1,848 passengers, 85,000 tons -- are part of a new series called Vista (get the connection?). Zuiderdam, the first in the series, is due out September 2002; the remaining four will be launched through 2005.

New features? Copying a Celebrity Millennium innovation, the ships will have “exterior elevators” with sea views; although the company’s announcement that they’d “vertically” transverse 10 decks would be more exciting if, say, they’d “horizontally” transport you from forward to aft.

Otherwise, there are minor innovations and enhancements to existing Holland America features -- the art collection, an Internet cafe, a disco, a Club HAL children’s facility and a concierge lounge for penthouse guests.
