Mother Nature -- or a simple stroke of luck -- spared cruise ports along the Gulf Coast this weekend from Hurricane Dennis, now a tropical depression. Dennis was on a path toward Carnival's Holiday's homeport of Mobile (a city Hurricane Ivan barely missed last year) before veering toward Pensacola (which Hurricane Ivan also hit head-on last year). Hurricane Dennis could have also wreaked havoc in New Orleans, but thankfully did not. Even Pensacola got off lighter than expected, though nearly a quarter million folks in the Florida Panhandle are still without electricity, according to the Associated Press, and there is significant property damage.
Though Carnival and Royal Caribbean tweaked itineraries for a few cruises that departed this weekend from Mobile, New Orleans and Florida, no further changes are expected, and port cities -- however soggy -- are up and running.
