Dead Whale Sails on Jewel of the Seas

September 28, 2004
As Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas approached its scheduled call at Saint John, New Brunswick, on Sunday, officers noticed something slightly amiss. An approximately 60-foot finback whale was draped over the bulbous bow that rides just beneath the water's surface.

The ship pulled up at the dock and local marine officials offloaded the uninvited passenger, towing the dead whale, which actually had been draped over the bow, back to sea. Royal Caribbean officials do not know whether the whale was already dead when "picked up" by the ship -- or not. Jewel of the Seas, which is sailing Canada/New England itineraries, had arrived at Saint John by way of a call at Quebec City, a cruise along the Saguenay River, and then a day at sea.

Passengers reportedly were unaware of the incident.
