Alaska Taxes Cruise Ships

More evidence of Alaska's increasing ambivalence toward the hundreds of thousands of cruise passengers who descend on the southeastern part of the state's pristine natural attractions each spring and summer. Yakutat Borough, home to Hubbard Glacier, is levying a $1.50 per head tax on all cruise ships entering its bay. A financial bonanza for Yakutat: Each year, more than 150 ships, carrying a quarter of a million passengers traverse the bay.
