Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera) City Tour Excursion Reviews
Take an unforgettable city tour in one of the most ecologically diverse destinations on the planet. Puntarenas is a lively town jam-packed with places to shop and eat, and remarkable sites that make this excursion worth the visit!
We were supposed to have a private tour and they put us on a bus. It was not what we booked. We did get to see some things, but were very disappointed that we were on a bus and did not get a private tour where we had control over the sights we were to see.
This gave us a chance to see more than just the beach. It was interesting to see Managua, volcanic lakes, and just the regular houses and countryside in between. Nicaragua is trying to boost its tourism and is not to where Costa Rica is. This is still a dictatorship in most respects. We didn't feel unsafe but there was one part where we were told not to take photos out one side of the bus at the risk of having our camera confiscated. That side was the national military headquarters and and armed soldier came up and reminded the guide and bus driver about it.
Our booked tour of the city and train ride was cancelled. We heard all kinds of rumors as to why, bot never head an official explanation from Princess. We ended up taking a taxi tour to a monkey sanctuary where we were able to see and feed the monkeys and a local racoon-looking creature.
We did the San Jose city tour. This was terrible. The first place they took us to was El Jardin, a souvenir store. 10 minutes to get there off the main road, 40 minutes there, 10 minutes back......what a waste. We hadn't even seen anything yet. Salad bowls were 100$, hoodies were 45$....I don't think so. Then we finally get to San Jose, rushed thru the National Museum, and the National Theatre. Such a shame. Do not do this tour, a shame they don't offer a bus transfer into town, then let you do your own thing.
I do recommend Charlie Soto if Okey Dokey tours for this stop. We got a really good tour of the area, fed Monkeys, saw the beach( it was very smelly due to some type of Algae breakout), saw a Butterfly house but the biggie was the 8-part zipline. It was great. 89.00
Charlie Soto was recommended by other Cruise Critic members and arranged a great tour. We had a 5 hour tour which included a river cruise, visited the rain forest, saw many birds, crocodiles, etc. Tour was reasonably priced and a discount given to Cruise Critic members. I would highly recommend this tour.
