Juneau Glacier Tour Excursion Reviews

A glacier tour is the only way to get up close and personal with Alaska's icy behemoths. Mendenhall Glacier is one of the most impressive glaciers accessible from Juneau.

Was really beautiful. We walked back to the waterfall. It was quite a long walk but well worth it.

City Tour and Mendenhall Glacier. Just about every tour company waiting for you charges $8 each way for the shuttle to and from the glacier. $30 for a tour guide who takes you to the glacier and in and around Juneau. The guide really was interesting (a Tlingilt sp? tribe member). You might see bears around the glacier- its pretty safe.

We took a bus to Mendenhall Glacier, we had about an hour to walk around on our own. We saw salmon and BEARS!! It was very cold but fun! Was a lot of walking and hard for my parents to walk on the steep trails.

Combined City/Glacier Tour offered right as you get off the ship. Skip the "City Tour" part and just go to the Glacier for less money. Glacier was EXCELLENT, city tour not so much.

The glacier tour was part of a combo whale watching/glacier tour. After whale watching, we were driven to the glacier and given an hour there - we had plenty of time, and saw salmon, and bears along with time to see the glacier and tour the visitor centre. The bus was back on time, and brought us either downtown, or right back to the cruise ship.

This was not a separate excursion but rather part of our cruise. We only had half a day in Juneau and this took up the second half. It was a very enjoyable part as the scenery was spectacular. The surrounding mountains are huge and you are so close to them. The gouges in the surfaces from prior passages of glaciers were amazing. We couldn't get as close to the Sawyer glacier as the captain wanted because of ice in the water just ahead of the ship, but we still got a good view. I wanted to mention here an interesting incident that happened on the way as it also makes a point. On the way we came across an excursion boat which had broken down. As it turned out, it was actually an excursion of about 100 passengers from the Jewel, and the arrangement had been that they would tour the glacier separately ahead of us and we would pick them up when we got there. Well they all transferred back safely as their boat, although largely out of action, was at least able to make its way over to the Jewel. However, this definitely gave me pause regarding booking excursions from private vendors, of which I have always been a strong proponent. What would have happened if these had been passengers from another vessel? Or if they had broken down in an area where we weren't going! Hmmm!

At $19 this was a great value. It was 2 hours in total- and it was beautiful. Our tour took us to the Mendall Glacier.

We loved Mendenhall Glacier! We booked it ourselves and took a tour bus there and back for $16 roundtrip per person. Hiked to the waterfall, got some great pics. Loved it! In port, try Tracy's Crab Legs, a food truck right next to the ship. Best we've ever had, and all the locals agree!

DH and I chose the Tracy Arm excursion (JNU-660), wherein a catamaran picks you up from the ship while it is Tracy Arm and takes you closer to Sawyer Glacier, then meets up with the ship in Juneau. We got closer to the glacier (within a half-mile) than the ship did, and also got a close-up of a bear on the shore, a waterfall, and an eagle on an iceberg. Many harbor seals were laid out on floating icebergs. This was a great tour, but the ride back to the ship seemed long if you had nothing in particular to do.

The float plane landed at Taku Lodge where we were treated to a delicious meal of smoked salmon while the history of the lodge was shared. A walking tour near the glacier gave closer views of one of the amazing ice rivers.

we took the Tracy Arm & Glacier Explorer. Got to see the fjord up close including getting within 1/4 mi of both north and south Sawyer Glaciers as well as seeing many harbor seals on the icebergs in front of the glacier. The naturalist onboard was excellent.

Wonderful nature hike with well informed guide who obviously loved what she was doing. We had plenty of time for pictures and questions. The walk was the right amount of variety for a nice workout without feeling overdone. The glacier view across the lake was awesome. Not enough time for the visitor's center but it left us wanting more anyway! :o) Kudos!

It was a good tour but as I said in my review, the tour bout was only about 200 yards closer to the glacier than the Jewel was. I would have been warm and richer if I had just stayed on the Jewel.

Juneau was a great town - we explored a little before our Glacier helicopter tour with North Star Trekking. It was amazing on the glacier, brilliant experience and well-worth the hefty price tag for the excursion. Afterwardsm, we took the tram to the top of Mount Roberts, and took in the views. The restaurant up there has a great balcony, where we drank a pitcher of Alaska's finest beer, and enjoyed the peace and quiet, with eagles soaring above.
