Kauai Wailua River Excursion Reviews

A tour of the Wailua River, one of Kauai's most dramatic natural attractions, is perfect for first-timers to the island and nature lovers alike.

The Wailua river is a little over-rated. It is beautiful, of course, but please be aware that the river looks the same all along the whole ride. The scenery doesn't change. In other words, after one has seen the river for about five to ten minutes...that's it! Our tour lasted about 45 minutes each way and I was done with it after ten minutes, Fortunately, they had superb hula dancing performed by beautiful women on our boat which made up for the slow ride.

I have to say this was the most spectacular tour and the best $210.00 dollars I spent on the entire trip!
I booked this tour prior to going! goggled Helicopter tours in Kauai! I went with the slightly more expensive tour, held 5 in the NEW helicopter's. The tour was a little over an hour and a half long and you can PURCHASE YOUR own private tour that you took! You will be given the DVD before you leave! Do some homework folks! absolutely Breathtaking! I have taken other's including airplanes nothing compares! There is not a lot to do on this island by way of driving. I would not rent a car. The Island is 80% uninhibited! A must see by air! There of course lots of little stuff to shop by all the peer's! This Is one of the islands I plan to come back and stay a week! They have a couple Awesome hotels on this island and it is very private...... Breath taking Beauty!

We booked this tour through the ship and while it was somewhat crowded, the short trip up the riven on a large flat-bottomed boat was pleasant as we were serenaded by a Hawaiin music group which included a lovely young dancer. We also visited the Fern Grotto which was a little underwhelming.

Loved cruising up the Wailua River to some great Hawaiian songs and dances, beautiful setting, staff on the boat very cordial ! Unfortunately the main path up to the cave "FERN GROTTO" has been shut off and you don't get that close to it anymore, sad! Just not the same, but enjoyed the staff of 3 sing the beautiful Hawaiian Wedding Song ...

We booked the Wailua River Cruise, Luau & Romantic Ceremony on Kauai. The river cruises and the plantation where the Luau took place are owned and operated by the Smith family, who has been in Hawaii for 5 or more generations. They are very nice, as was the luau. There was a large group on this excursion, and a lot of couples, like us, celebrating anniversaries. The food was good and it was interesting to see how Kailua pig is prepared and to learn about poi. The grounds were beautiful, the 'show' was good and the 'Romantic Ceremony" was nice. We received a certificate, recited vows, and received special necklaces made from local seeds. The excursion was during the day, but I think if it could have been at night, it would have been more interesting and entertaining.

The tour operator was grumpy. He was blaming the passengers for his own lack of assistance and guidance. He was nowhere around when we were all directed onto his bus. This made him mad! He made sure that we all knew that he is 75 years old. We had to sit for a long time on the stationery bus, and later, we had to sit for a long time on the tethered river barge. We were all initially directed to the wrong barge. The river was ok, a bit boring. There were entertainers to help with that but they were only visible by those in the middle. We stopped at the Fern Grotto where the entertainers again performed. It was crowded; there were other boatloads there. It was difficult to get photos with so many people.

Honestly I was a bit skeptical about this excursion because I heard from one of the table mate at dinner about how terrible the excursion (Booked through Princess) was at Hilo. However this excursion was a lot of fun. First we went to a waterfall and Wailua River lookout area on a bus. Beautiful scenery. Then took the boat to the Fern Grotto. We couldn't go into the grotto for safety reasons, but the view was beautiful. After we took the boat ride back and went on a tour around the Smith's botanical garden on a tram. Very nice landscape with lots of chickens and peacocks. Then they uncovered the pig that's been roasting in the pit since a night prior. The food offered in buffet line were very delicious, especially the kalua pork bbq beef. It was also nice that they offered all-inclusive maitai :) There were entertainments such as singing and hula dancing throughout these events. Also the Romantic Ceremony was held at the dining hall which also included exchange of leis made with some sort of brown shell.

Kauai: We did the ships tour of the Wailua River Cruise, Fern Grotto, and Luau/show at Smith's Tropical Garden. Kauai is our favorite Hawaiian Island, and so beautiful. Our bus driver made some stops at beautiful places for photos on the way to the river. He also played the ukulele and sang for us! At the river, we got on the boats (like barges), and went upriver. At the Fern Grotto, our guide gave us a talk about the history there, and they had a Hawaiian band and a dancer that did the Hawaiian Wedding song. They have a platform there now, as folks are not allowed to walk up into the actual grotto, but it is a great spot for photos. A very lovely place. Then we went to Smith's Tropical Garden, and had a tour around the gardens before the luau. When we got to the Pavilion, Mr. Smith himself told us how they prepare the feast in the imu (underground oven). It is the traditional luau with all the trimmings, and open bar. They usually do this at night, of course, but Princess has arranged for them to do this for their passengers during the day. During the luau, "Uncle Larry" Rivera and his family put on a great show, and Uncle Larry is quite the entertainer. They get audience members up on stage to "help" with the show. We also had the "Romantic Ceremony", where they read the names of all the couples wishing to renew their commitment, and they got a kakui nut lei to place on their loved one. They read the Vows, and played the Hawaiian Wedding song. It is very sweet. Please note that if you are not doing the romantic ceremony, don't feel you won't love this tour- this is a small part (means a lot to the folks participating, tho). We would highly recommend this tour! Actually, we like it so much, we did it last time we were here, and came back again!

This was the Wailua River and Fern Grotto trip. We had a couple of stops on the way but nothing very exciting and there was no air conditioning on the coach so it was uncomfortably hot. We were taken to the river and boarded our flat bottomed boat. There were Hawaiian singers and dancers to entertain us as we sailed and they were very good and got all the men up to learn some hula dancing. We got off at the grotto and after a short walk through the wooded area arrived at the actual grotto which was very pretty and used a lot for weddings. This was only a half day trip which was enough.

Drove ourselves to the Fern Grotto Cruise. The river and the grotto were beautiful and worth the trip. However, the marina and the boats were more than a bit run down.

We were expecting a little more, but it was a good cruise up the river to the fern grotto. The performers going to the Fern Grotto and at the Fern Grotto were awesome. The scenery was great.

We booked a tour called The Wailua River and Fern Grotto. There was a boat ride to the Fern Grotto with entertainment of singing and hula dancing. Because of the rain, they had to sing the "Hawaiian Love Song" on the boat. It did clear up by the time we arrived at the Grotto and so we had a pleasant walk. We also visited the Opaekaa Falls and they were really flowing because it had been raining for a few days. We stopped at Ahukini Landing, a beach with lovely views. We prefer private tours, however, we were unable to arrange for one and so took the ships tour. It takes so long to get on and off the bus that it takes away from the pleasure.

Very nice, saw the canyon and did the river excursion to see the fern grotto. Just wish there was some Fern growing in the fern grotto. It was damaged by a bad storm several years ago and has not recovered. A good trip though.

Combo tour of Wailua River and Fern Grotto. Another long day for us. It was a beautiful boat ride and history along the way. Little disappointed that you can't get to the waterfall in the grotto, but it was for safety reasons. Overall probably won't do it again, but was good to do once.
