Colon (Cristobal) Gatun Lake Tour Excursion Reviews

Colon (Cristobal) Gatun Lake Tour cruise excursion
Overall Rating
A safari ride is one of the best ways to see the wildlife in Colon, including the sloths, monkeys and crocodiles living in and around Gatun Lake.

The tour I took was the Eco Tour of Gatun Lake plus Locks. The lake portion was so-so (word of caution: depending on your boat driver, sit on the right side – if you’re on the left you’ll spend the excursion looking at the lake and not the shoreline where birds, plants and wildlife are). The visit to the locks was very interesting – especially getting the landside view prior to the Millennium’s transit the next day. One barge and one freighter were passing through Gatun locks while we watched. If you can get an excursion that takes in Gatun locks you should. I cannot recommend the Gatun lake eco tour portion though.

The Princess Gatun lake cruise that we took was not very good, since there was very little wildlife (two monkeys and one sloth) and no other ships on Gatun lake. Wildlife and ship traffic are not guaranteed and on another day people might have more luck seeing interesting things on this tour but overall we were disappointed that our only Princess tour was the most disorganized tour we took on this cruise, and we would not want to utilize cruise tours in the future.

Excellent guide and tour on Gatun Lake! Actually got lucky and saw 2 and 3-toed sloths, toucans, and howler monkeys on the tour! Very nice to be on the lake and good information provided by the guide on the ride to the tour.

The ride on the lake was pretty but we spent so much time staring at the hills looking for monkeys and going really slow. I would have been happier taking a nice ride on the lake and enjoying the scenery. Maybe we were there on a slow day and people usually see a lot of monkeys?

If I wrote everything that happened during our day, it could be published into a novel! At the time it seemed a very long and very hot day and no fault of anybody at all, but we arrived back on ship 2 + hours late, so very tired and dirty!! But with hindsight - what an experience! However, not sure would recommend this trip as whilst it sounds wonderful, just too long and people who stayed on ship saw plenty of canal activity going in and coming out - so if went again would do a 'jungle' type trip - very pleased we did with ship!!

We read that the city of Colon can be very dangerous to tourists so we took the ships tour that included a boat ride on Gatun Lake, a visit to an Embrera Indian village and a trip to the Gatun Locks. The boat ride was OK. We didn't see anything spectacular. The Embrera Indians looked authentic although I go the impression that they were in the "village" only to show off for the tourists. A ship was going through the locks while we were there which impressed our friends who were at the canal for the first time. This was our least favorite tour because it was a large group and we were spoiled by the ambiance of the private tours at the other ports of call.
