Colon (Cristobal) Gatun Lake Safari Excursion Reviews

The ride on the lake was pretty but we spent so much time staring at the hills looking for monkeys and going really slow. I would have been happier taking a nice ride on the lake and enjoying the scenery. Maybe we were there on a slow day and people usually see a lot of monkeys?

If I wrote everything that happened during our day, it could be published into a novel! At the time it seemed a very long and very hot day and no fault of anybody at all, but we arrived back on ship 2 + hours late, so very tired and dirty!! But with hindsight - what an experience! However, not sure would recommend this trip as whilst it sounds wonderful, just too long and people who stayed on ship saw plenty of canal activity going in and coming out - so if went again would do a 'jungle' type trip - very pleased we did with ship!!

We read that the city of Colon can be very dangerous to tourists so we took the ships tour that included a boat ride on Gatun Lake, a visit to an Embrera Indian village and a trip to the Gatun Locks. The boat ride was OK. We didn't see anything spectacular. The Embrera Indians looked authentic although I go the impression that they were in the "village" only to show off for the tourists. A ship was going through the locks while we were there which impressed our friends who were at the canal for the first time. This was our least favorite tour because it was a large group and we were spoiled by the ambiance of the private tours at the other ports of call.
