Checked out the Botanic Gardens and the Cable car - great, but allow some time and you could walk around all day if you are not careful. The Waterfront area has been changed significantly and is set up very well. But the must do item is the Te Papa museum!! ...

We walked the downtown then on up to the government buildings. Had a fun lunch with sandwiches & local pastries. We toured the national museum but weren't overly impressed. The museum was big on messaging but when one leaves, you've learned little to nothing about the geology of New Zealand, the original flora & fauna, or early migrations. Took shuttle into city from port which was well organised. Wellington is small enough to explore on your own. Took funicular and admired views followed by nice walk down through botanical gardens. In the afternoon went to the Wellington museum on queens wharf which is worth a visit. ...
