We did the hop-on-hop-off bus on our own...it was worth doing and was inexpensive. Enjoyed seeing their big 'claim to fame' the world's steepest street. It was a two minute stop...got the picture, moving along.

Checked out the Botanic Gardens and the Cable car - great, but allow some time and you could walk around all day if you are not careful. The Waterfront area has been changed significantly and is set up very well. But the must do item is the Te Papa museum!! ...
We walked the downtown then on up to the government buildings. Had a fun lunch with sandwiches & local pastries. We toured the national museum but weren't overly impressed.
