An unexpected pleasure. We new nothing about it, but were very impressed with this smaller city. We found the old Jewish section fascinating, containing the oldest mikva in Germany and the remains what is believed to be the model for Ashkenazi synagogues. Unfortunately, the stop (morning only) was too short. ...

We went on our own this day and it was an amazing adventure! Toured Speyer, caught a train to Heidelburg to see the castle, then caught up with the ship in Rudesheim via Frankfurt. A fantastic day! ...

Great walking tour and guide. When we exhibited interest in the ruined Jewish quarter, she volunteered (at the end of the regular tour) to take us there and facilitated getting a little discount on the entrance fee (there was a small group of us) and accompanied us, explaining as she went. One of the better surprises on the cruise. Interesting town and not damaged by bombings during the 2nd WW, so old houses are intact and not rebuilt. There were very few straight streets in Speyer. ...
