We wish we had more time in this port to experience the town and the surrounding areas. While the rest of the family tried to do a horse tour, the husband and I cruised through Volcanoes National Park, visited the interim interpretive center, had amazing coffee at Hilo Sharks Coffee, and otherwise enjoyed our time. This city is closed on Sunday which is the day we came into port. So, unless you booked an excursion, there wasn't much to do and the taxi drivers will try to charge you way more than they should. $12 was what we ended up paying to get back to the ship after the free shuttle stopped at noon. Be ware of those taxi drivers, ask how much before you get in their cabs. We did find a few shops open and ...

The cruise terminal is a large warehouse with some tourist services. There are shuttles to downtown Hilo (it isn't worth it to walk) as well as Walmart and car rental services. The car rentals are almost all at the nearby Hilo airport. I rented a car to tour Hawaii Volcanos National Park, which was spectacular. I recommend a rental car over the ship's tour.
