Very disorganized outside terminal - absolute pandemonium. Alamo was only picking up the actual 'drivers' who then had to return from the airport, 20 minutes away, to pick up the remaining friends and family! Finally got our convertible and during the drive, discovered huge spider webs around the back seatbelts and a dash that had black ants wandering in/out of the speakers, etc.! Not much to see in Hilo in the short time frame. Went to Akaka Falls which was a bit of a hike on a hot day and it was fairly boring. Accidentally found a little out-of-the-way place called 'What's Shakin' with absolutely incredible food! Returned the car early.
This is about our 14th visit to Oahu so we're fairly comfortable in walking to the car rental place and picking up our convertible. Off to the North Shore and Turtle Bay and Banzai Pipeline area. Stopped several times along the way and took pictures, especially of the Highway to Heaven which is a landmark of 4,000 steps to the top - incredible! Had lunch at Turtle Bay, walked the Pipeline beach and drove back to the city and returned car. Walking back to ship, stopped at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and had THE best bartender in Erik, who made fabulous martinis and lots of fun conversation. Great way to end the day.
Weather always 'iffy' in Kauai but this day was beautiful. Played golf at the Kauai Lagoons with two other folks and the course is gorgeous and challenging. It is directly behind the Kauai Marriott and a short shuttle ride from the ship. Don't hit one of the gazillion geese wandering the course because if you kill it - $25,000 fine!
Tendered into Lahaina and took a taxi to the car rental where we got another convertible to travel a bit of the island. Stopped at Iao Valley to see the 'needle' but it was dampy and misty so we kept driving. Just past the Kapalui Airport, there is a restaurant called 'Mama's Fish House' that is a must-see. Incredible food. 4 valets to park the cars! Seats about 100 people and was packed with waiting lines. Prices VERY high but oh, the food. We shared lobster guacamole with taro chips for $20. Beer is $7 each. Every table has a view of the ocean. And Mama herself is often there, sitting at the bar with her hubby, a tiny little woman enjoying a nice (expensive) glass of wine! Back to Lahaina to do the prerequiste shopping and back to ship.
