Mona has a nice little port areas but we didn't entire far from there. Had spent the day before in Hilo doing a tour of volcano, etc so we were not wanting to be in a car all day again. We went to outrigger hotel on 2.00 shuttle and had a nice lunch and some beach time. Beaches aren't much though unless you drive for a long way, pretty small and rocky, saw some turtles though!
The park was great and we we're really glad we did it but our van was truly not safe to be on the road, watch out for island marketing, a booking company that simply sets up tours with local operators. They would note refund our ones even though we foundation slip of paper in the van saying that the wheel was not working correctly and the entire van rattled! Hilo is not a very impressive port.
We did a lot in Maui, maybe too much!! We had one member ride the bike down Haleakala and the rest went over to Lahaina the first day. Had a great dinner at royal palms that night
next day went on an all day tour of road to Hana. A lot of cool sights but we grew weary of an entire day in a van on a winding road with no real time for stops! Don't recommend driving it though just maybe doing half of it would be plenty if you can pick what you really want to see. We liked the seven sacred pools and just the black sand beaches with lava tube. If you are up to it do more inking to waterfalls, etc and enjoy the wonderful climate
Waimea Canyon Rating:
This was an awesome experience and having done a helicopter flight over the grand canyon, I felt this was much smoother and easier on the stomach! We thought our pilot Brian did a nice job and had no problems with anything although this was also booked through island marketing. (see Hilo port) the ship also goes around the coast which was awesome so if you don't want to fly over just be sure to be out on deck on the second day as you leave for Honolulu
