Did not have a wonderful day as the city was crowded. Dont go to the Vatican on the day the Pope speaks unless you like pushy crowds. If you do go, buy tickets via the Internet before you leave to avoid the lines at the major attractions. Pay for a guide to the Vatican but still expect lines.
Pompei is a good place to visit if you like to see ancient things. Get your tickets ahead of time to avoid the lines. Walk through the city and eat Pizza.
Hire a taxi and go to the beach. Good place to relax after three hectic port days in Italy. Find a nice place to eat and sit back and enjoy the sun. Even in October.
