The Takshunuk Mountain 4X4 tour is breathtaking. You drive your own 4X4 (really just an ultra heavy duty golf cart) up the mountain and stop along the way for photo ops. Midway up you stop at their cabin for cookies and coffee or tea, or hot chocolate, then continue to the top and are amazed at the view!! Then you continue down to the cabin for a lunch of chicken, halibut and trimmings. EXCELLENT! The guide is a lot of fun and takes time to answer question and take pictures as needed. This 3 to 4 hour excursion seemed to end too soon.
Harv and Marv is the way to go for your whale watching pleasure. We checked it out beforehand and saw the great reviews and booked it on our own and were not disappointed at all....We also saved approx. 80 dollars a person booking this on our own. It rained that day so we didn't walk around town too much. HOWEVER, we stopped for lunch at Tracey's King Crab Shack which is located right next to the ship by the stern. Its a walk up and order place with tents to eat at, but the food is incredible!!! We had the crab roll which is a huge piece of king crab leg on a roll topped with cole slaw. YUM!!!! The crab bisque is a must also. Well worth what initally appears to be an expensive price.
If I were rating this based on the city itself, it would be a 2. Typical tourist city with lots of nothing but jewelry and other tourist shops. ONE GIANT TOURIST TRAP! Thank goodness we had the tour on the Bering Sea Boat, the Aleutian Ballad which made this port a lot of fun.
