Must see: Acropolis & Temple of Poseidon Good to see: Temple of Zeus & Changing of the guard Must do: enjoy the local cuisine! We had a great gyro (pronounced yir-o) Hire a local guide to show you the best of Athens. We were lucky, our ship was there on a Sunday so most of the attractions are free. Don't miss Poseidon! Its a long drive outside the city, but you'll be rewarded with an incredible view of the bluest sky & ocean.
Must do: Egyptian Museum & Pyramids of Giza If you can: ride a camel at Giza It's everything you've dreamed of! Get on the camel at Giza, it's fantastic! NO cameras allowed in Egyptian Museum, don't even try
Must do: Ancient Ephesus also interesting: rug factory Best ancient ruins we've ever seen. Pay extra & go into the terrace house. We booked a private tour through reviews on trip advisor. Excellent tour guide, great experience, we even ate lunch at the rug factory surrounded by beautiful carpets.
Must do: Vatican City & Sistine Chapel Want to see what the Vatican is doing with all of your donations?? Check it out: I've never seen such opulence & splendor in my life. The collections of the Vatican are surely the greatest in the world. After all, they have an unlimited budget. We paid the ship for a train ride from the port of Civ. to San Pietro Square. The ride was pleasant & about an hour. The train is called the "Roma Express". We were lucky to be in Rome on the last Sunday of the month, when the Sistine Chapel is free to enter. The map & info the ship gave us was useless, so it took a while to find the Chapel museum. When we saw the line, we knew we found the right place. We waited in a line almost 2 hours. But it was worth it, the experience is amazing, the collections of art & artifacts etc is overwhelming. I wish we had a guide, but we were unable to book a guide in advance because it was Sunday. I highly recommend you go with a guide if you can. Mail yourself a postcard from the Vatican post office!
