A great port for #1 ahore excursion. Weather was great - lots of interesting shops, and great for "people watching". A very friendly and talented local artist, "Christian", had a booth at the landing area. After checking out various shops and exploring the area on foot we returned and purchased a couple of special items from him.

Our 2nd port was actually at PUERTO CHACABUCO, CHILE. This port just recently added to Ports of Call list. We took the tender to the dock, and walked up to the few buildings in the area. Nothing there as far as "tourist type" facilities. There is a town some miles away, and what is described as a beautiful lake area, with busses available from the dock area. But we elected to return to the ship after "exploring" on foot. I feel that it won't be long before locals will set up booths for handcrafts and other items, but at the time of our visit it was an enjoyable day to relax for a while under a sunny sky.

We were eager to see Penguins, and had signed up with HAL for a bus ride to visit a penguin colony some distance away. It was a good outing and we greatly enjoyed watching those entertaining little creatures up close. My daughter took enough pictures to fill a book...

I was feeling a bit "under the weather" that day, and our time at Ushuaia was very limited. The town was very intrigueing to see from aboard the ship - a very quaint looking place, and one we really had wanted to explore at length. We didn't see enough of the area to rate it.

STANLEY, FALKLAND ISLANDS. This was a great day for us. We had made arrangements to have a local driver take us to the area with the largest penguin colonies in the South America region. The ride to the penguin area was a real fun experience in itself, and to see the multitlude of penguins when we reached the ocean area was almost unbelievable. Thousands of them - mostly seeming oblivious to all of the people snapping zillions of pictures of them. We'd heard of the extreme wind & rains that often hit the islands, and had come prepared with raincoats & warm clothing. Our day there was a bright sunny one - it couldn't have been nicer. Our driver was a fountain of information about almost any question we asked about the Falklands, and had a delightful sense of humor. All in all, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

BUT,FOR ME, THE DAYS AT SEA WHILE IN THE WATERS NEAR ANTARCTICA LEFT WHAT WILL BE THE MOST LONG LASTING MEMORIES. THE SHEER BEAUTY OF IT ALL WAS AMAZIBG - MANY ICEBERGS MUCH LARGER THAN THE SHIP - SOME LANDLOCKED, SOME FLOATIBG. AREAS OF OPEN WATER THAT WOULD VERY QUICKLY GET CLOGGED WITH SMALLER BERGS TO THE POINT THAT THEY BECAME IMPASSABLE. AND OF COURSE, GIGANTIC GLACIERS WITH WHAT LOOKED LIKE BLUE GROTTOS AND LARGE CAVES JUST ABOVE THE WATER LINE. IT TRULY WAS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR ME - ONE THAT I'LL REMEMBER ALWAYS.
