Rome (Civitavecchia)
Port Rating:
Rome is one of our favourite cities. There is so much to see and do. The archaeological sites are amazing. We like to walk everywhere. This time we walked about 15 miles along the Via Antica Appia and back. We also visited the archaeological ruins of the Baths of Caracalla, the Forum, and the Palatine Hill. As always, the food in Rome is fantastic. The gelato is wonderful.

Athens
Port Rating:
The Acropolis is a must see. The Parthenon is awesome. This was the real highlight for us.
The Plaka was disappointing. It was a great place to have lunch. However, it mostly consists of touristy shops selling jewellery and kitsch. Should have allowed for more time to tour other sites.

Port Rating:
A wonderful surprise. Beautiful landscapes. Friendly people. Ephesus totally amazing. We enjoyed every minute.
First stop was the House of the Virgin Mary. Our tour was one of the last to leave the ship (we had to wait for a couple of people)so we had to wait in a huge line-up to get in.
Second stop was Ephesus. Walked along the ancient roads down to the Library of Celsius and then onto the theatre and the Harbour Road. Very impressive.
Third was the Museum which contained amazing artifacts many of which were removed from the ruins of Ephesus and stored in the museum.
Then onto the ruins of the Church of St John the Evangelist.
Totally wonderful experience. We want to visit Turkey again and see more sights.

Haifa
Port Rating:
We enjoyed a tour of the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Golan Heights, Jordan River, and Nazareth. Haifa itself is a lovely sea port. There is a pretty hanging garden worth seeing and great views from the heights. It was an wonderful experience to see these places.

Jerusalem (Ashdod)
Port Rating:
Very interesting. We took a side trip into Bethlehem and visited the Church of the Nativity. Because of construction and various church services, we were not able to see much of the Church and we were not able to enter the crypt. All together we spent about 3 hours in Bethlehem between the "mandatory" shopping stop and the Church. So, it was disappointing not to have seen more. The Jerusalem side was better organized. It was totally amazing to see and well worth a visit.

Cairo (Port Said)
Port Rating:
Awesome. The city that never sleeps. It is so alive....and so polluted. There are no traffic lights or rules....yet there are no accidents. We did a two day excursion with an overnight in Cairo that was totally worth every minute.
The pyramids are awesome and majestic. We saw the light and sound show and it was very interesting to see the pyramids and sphinx all lite up at night. The next day we went to Saqqara and visited the Step pyramid and one of the mastabas. Then onto the Mosque of Mohamed Ali. Memphis was a bit disappointing because there are so few ruins. However, the fallen statute of Ramses (housed) is well worth seeing. Then onto Giza and the great pyramids and sphinx. Our tour guide was exceptional and explaining everything. The vendors were out in full force, but we followed our guide's advice to ignore them and not take anything they offered to us (just let it fall) and we were left alone. It worked. If you have the opportunity, this is definitely a trip worth taking.

Taormina
Port Rating:
A beautiful village with exceptional views. Our trip was too short...it would have been nice to have time for lunch in town. We enjoyed walking through the streets and up to the theatre. Great photo opps! It was very crowded with loads of bus tours from the various ships in port!

Naples
Port Rating:
We took a minibus tour of the Amalfi coast stopping in Positano and Sorrento before heading to Pompeii. It was a wonderful excursion. We had a fabulous lunch on a terrace overlooking the bay in Sorrento. Pompeii was well worth seeing. I had not realized how large a site it was. A wondeful day and a great way to explore this coastline. Definitely worth it.
