As a trade-off to a shorter port call, we enjoyed the pretty daytime approach up the fjord to the city. The free shuttle dropped us off in the center of town by a pretty park with a fountain, sculptures, manicured lawns, and flowers. We walked to the BergensExpressen, a faux choo-choo that took us around the city for about 45 min. and up into the hills to a vantage point overlooking the harbor -- a bargain for $20 (they accept $, euros, and GBP, so no need to change money). It was fun to browse at the market afterwards with the fresh fish, flowers, troll dolls, sweaters & knit caps.

We took our only organized tour from the ship here. The excursion took us outside the city past large areas covered by lava flows. We stopped at a lake, then the "soltafaras" -- an area where groundwater erupts as steam vents and boiling mudflats, followed by photo stop at the beautiful Blue Lagoon, a visit to the Viking Museum, and brief city tour. The scenery was really striking, though I could have wished for a better guide. He had some difficulty with English pronunciation, and his commentary was quite limited.

We'd been here twice before, so went searching for something else to try (after having previously seen the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, and Ft. Louisburg.) The Miner's Museum 14 mi. away in Glace Bay sounded doable. Only problem, with 2 large ships in port, not many taxis available, and driver wanted to provide a tour, not just transportation. Finally reached a compromise, and sent off to museum. Couldn't do the mine tour at the museum because Princess tour had filled one time slot and next time slot would get us back to the ship too late for a short port call, so we settled for just watching the film and viewing the exhibits.
