Newport, Rhode Island is a beautiful port town. If you like shopping, museums, old mansions, or just walking it's a great stop. One thing I would recommend is that before purchasing an excursion onboard, you stop at the Visitor's Bureau & Information Center, a short walk from the pier behind the Marriott and get a hop on hop off bus pass for the day ($6) for unlimited use. Don't miss "The Breakers" the old Vanderbilt mansion. It is breathtaking. A combo pass will get entrance to other attractions as well.
Halifax was our first stop in Canada. A short walk from the pier along the boardwalk will get you into the downtown. A great place to explore on your own or I would suggest you take a taxi or limo for $45 per-hour. The drivers will take you on a better tour that the tour busses. So if your with a small group it pays to split the price. Be aware that a hop on hop off bus ticked here is $69.95. If you like history go to the Atlantic Maritime Museum On Water Street which has artifacts from the Titanic. There are other exhibits there worth looking at. And if you're hungry, we had a great traditional native meal at "The Old Triangle Irish Ale House" on Prince Street.
Here we purchased an excursion onboard for the Countryside Tour. We had a great host, Real, who took us to Quebec's countryside. All within a half hour from the city. We went to a Maple Sucre Shack where we had a presentation on maple syrup and other products. There's a gift store there where you can pick up anything maple. On the way out don't miss a free sample of the Maple Taffy, served on a bed of ice. Then they give you a delicious cup of coffee and a piece of the best apple pie you ever sunk you teeth into. Finally there's a wild stuffed animal museum on the property. It's worth a look. A few other stops and you're back at the ship. There you can take the free shuttle into town and peruse the Artisan's district hand made crafts and even take a ride on the Funicular.
Last stop you tender into port. Not too much here. Take a walk into town or right at the pier they have a good handmade crafts for sale. See if you can get one of the small violins ($24.95) they make a great gift for the kiddies. This is the short stop, last tender is at 12:30pm.
