We selected a 5 hr tour - Scenic Rome - we saw the main sites from the coach & had a 45min stop in St Marks Square which was too short to do anything due to the crowds queueing to see the Sistine Chapel etc. Our friends opted for an independent 'Taxi' tour by mini bus -8 people 50 euros each. They actually got out of the taxi to see all the sites including the Trevi fountain & the Sistine Chapel & had much better value for money & a much nicer trip altogether.
We did our won thing in Cagliari as we had holidayed in Sardinia before. We got the free shuttle bus from ship to town & wandered around (mostly uphill) admiring the views, visiting the Palace & the Cathedral. OK but I have seen much better in other places & there was so much graffiti everywhere. Such a shame. Our friends did a half day tour to Vilasimius & saw pink Flamingos. They seemed quite pleased with their tour.
Ship docks right by the town, an easy 5/10 minute walk to shops or town beach. We did the half day coach tour to the Prunelli Gorge - very pleasant but not for those who suffer from vertigo or fear of steep zigzag narrow mountain roads and a large coach! Our stop at a cafe was enhanced by the local Pietra beer made from local chestnuts. Our trips was due to have been on the cog railway through the mountains but technical problems with the train meant a switch to a coach which was a little disappointing.
Ship docks some distance from the town so the shuttle at 6$ per person each way was essential. Lovely city area around the magnificent Cathedral & narrow streets with many little shops & cafes. A lovely day.
