We joined the cruise in Cape Town, having flown in 5 days prior to the cruise. Cape Town is fantastic, there is so much to see and do. We managed the trip up Table Mountain but a lot of people were disappointed as when the wind blows the cable car tends to get grounded. The whole waterfront area of Cape Town is excellent for shopping, eating, drinking and open air entertainment.

Our next port of call was Walvis Bay, we enjoyed the walk in to the town, but there is not a lot to see or do, the ship had excursions in to the desert and to a lake area but we felt it would be too rushed.

The next port of call was Dakar in West Africa, again we enjoyed the walk in and around the town, but the market area was dirty, smelly and a bit intimidating, we could not shake off a self appointed `guide'. Despite telling him repeatedly that we preferred to explore alone, he kept tagging along. after we had been all around the town, we gave him $10, he was most affronted and told us it was not enough, so we said, `take it or leave it, as we did not request or want you tagging around after us' he then took the money with a bad grace. I would not eat or drink in Dakar, we saw people urinating in the streets and the most awful unhygienic looking places.

.

Next port of call was Tenerife, Santa del a Cruz, we were familiar with it as we had been there in the past, a lovely city. We visited some churches and had a good walk around.

Next port was Maderia, we had never been there, it is lovely, beautiful gardens, we took the tour on the open top bus, we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the botanic gardens, with just a sandwich, fruit and soft drink. We had a pleasant afternoon strolling around the shops and sea front, we would go back again.

We docked at the Port of Rome which is about 70 miles from Rome. because we were late leaving Cape Town due to high winds the time ashore at the different ports was curtailed. At Port of Rome, we docked at 10am and needed to be back on board by 5.30 pm. We had intended to go to Rome on the ship excursion but decided that it would be too rushed, we also had to pack that night as we were disembarking at Genoa at 8am the following morning. We had a lovely leisurely day, we went ashore and found a little local market, we also found one of the Italian chain stores Oviesse, which has very reasonable priced clothes and other things. So we were able to buy a few gifts. We got back for a late lunch and packed in the afternoon, so we were able to enjoy our last night on board without feeling stressed. Talking to those who did the trip to Rome, they just saw it from the window of the coach, there was a 1 hour stop in St Peters Square, but time was so tight that people were frightened to explore too far in case they missed the coach back. We would like to visit Rome but think we may do it as a short 3 day break later in the year.
