Took a taxi to the Caneel Bay Hilton. Utilized the lovely beaches. Had been to Trunk Bay on three prior cruises and had also done a full island tour. This is a beautiful, protected island (2/3 is US Park Service property).
Martinique was the reason for selecting this cruise. Had been there three times in the 1990's. While the island itself is still lovely, downtown Fort de France has deteriorated. No longer a 'little Paris.' Gone all but one of the wonderful French department stores. Too many unemployed young men hanging out on corners. The park is fenced in and is just a shadow of its former beauty. No one enjoyed this port.
The ship's general island tour was good. Beautiful island. Shell Beach is just a short walk from downtown. The racing yachts were in port for an Easter regatta - very impressive. However, many shops were not open while we were there - they open late in the afternoon.
For the beach, go to Lower Bay either by open-air land taxi or water taxi. Now that I've experienced Bequia, would take tour to St. Vincent the next time.
