Port Chalmers - Took ships shuttle to town of Dunedin $7 p/p one way, too far to walk, taxi $45, local bus about $5NZ but may not be regular. Nice town to easily walk around with plenty of cafe's and good shopping.
Port of Wellington an easy 15 - 20min walk to town from ship on flat ground mostly along waterfront. Walk to cable car and cost is $5NZ return ride to top to the botanical gardens, much cheaper than taking same tour from ship. Nice pubs and cafe's and good shopping.
Ship dock only a 5-10 min easy walk to town centre Plenty to do here. Once again it is easy to see some of the sights without booking tours from ship. Kelly Tarlton Underwater world entry $33NZ and they have a free shuttle pick up across road from Information centre at the dock. Give yourself plenty of time as it can be very busy, especially if it is a weekend or public holiday.
Walk up to the Sky tower from port is around 15min for great views if it is a clear day, even though entry was a little expensive to go all the way to top at $28NZ p/p
