Portofino

We loved Portofino, it is so beautiful. We decided to just have a low key day, we explored the town and enjoyed the views. Portofino was our only tender port, we had no problem using the tender, a very short wait. We enjoyed a nice long lunch in a cafe overlooking the water, it was pricey there but so what, that was the reason we booked a cheap cabin. Our first gelato ended our day there and the views are amazing on the tender back to the ship.

We love Florence and had been there before, but our friends had not. We decided since we were in port overnight, that we would spend the night in a hotel in Florence to be able to have more time to enjoy the sights. We had a driver waiting for us when we got off the ship, he drove us to Pisa for about an hour, plenty of time to take pictures. Then off to Florence, we arrived around lunchtime at our hotel, The Hermitage which is right at the end of the Ponte Vecchio bridge and is very lovely. They have a beautiful rooftop patio that overlooks the river and the bridge, the views at night are amazing. Again, our rooms were ready, we quickly dropped off our overnight bag and off we went. We enjoyed exploring the city on our own, since it was Monday, the museums were closed so on our second day we were able to go to the Uffizi Gallery. We did not have advance reservations, even though I did know it is recommended, but our hotel was able to arrange it. The hotel arranged for a taxi to take us back to the port in the afternoon as our ship departed at 7pm.

We had an overnight in Venice, I love Venice, to me it seems magical. Due to a film festival while we were there, we were able to dock right at St. Mark's Square when we first arrived, lucky us. That was one less transfer to purchase which they were charging $10 each way. Around 7 that evening the ship moved to the cruise terminal area, so we used the shuttle back to the ship which was located right near the gandolas at St. Mark's, very convenient. On our second day, we were supposed to leave at 2, but due to a Regatta, we were unable to leave until 5, lucky us again. We did Venice on our own, just walking around and enjoying the sites and of course a gandola ride which costs us 80 euro, but worth every cent to me.

Dubrovnik is beautiful, I enjoyed this port. We did this on our own, we had purchased the ships shuttle for $5 each way so it was easy. We kept hearing everywhere on ship that they did not take euros there, that is totally not true. We used euros for everything, entry onto the wall, for lunch, at a local bakery, gelato and the gift shops, no problem and we also received change in euro.

We had a driver waiting for us at the port in Naples. We wanted to spend some time in Sorrento, which is lovely and then again in Positano, which is beautiful and of course the drive along the Amalfi Coast is incredible. Our driver took us up to a local restaurant located on the hillside above Positano, with an amazing view. He had arranged a price fixed lunch for us that was unbelievable. The antipasto must have included about 12 different dishes and then we had about 6 different pastas and finished with fruit, dessert and Limoncello. OMG!!!!! Then he risked us away to Pompeii which we had hired a private guide. We had been there before but again our friends had not, it was so wonderful to have a guide to narrate and navigate our way. It was much better than looking at a map and figuring it all out, since we did have limited time. She was able to give us a lot of insight and explanation on the events that took place and some extra tidbits that are not in the guide books. Great day!

Upon disembarkation, we had a driver waiting to take us to Rome. We planned on spending 2 nights at Hotel Bolivar. We decided since we needed a transfer anyway we might a well include a tour. We again, had hired a private guide for the day. When we got to Rome she met us at the Vatican, where we started our tour. She had majored in Art/History in college and she was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us an amazing tour, loaded with facts and she was so passionate in the way she would explain everything. She was fabulous! She recommended a great place for lunch and then off we went to explore the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, which again, she was so enthusiastic in retelling stories and facts. Our second day in Rome we spent exploring the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and the Piazza Navona. Our hotel arranged a taxi to the airport.
