Lets start with the basics: DO Not go on the leather store tour. It is a waste of time. expensive, average quality, and a typical tourist trap!!! Just outside the port (2 minutes walk form the boat) were some lovely ladies handing out very useful maps of the old town, with a marked walking route, highlighting the things to see! Free, and most worthwhile, a charming old city, with lots of nice focal points, and friendly people. I have heard that it can be dangerous,so beware. Saw lots of police and police dogs around,so clearly they take the crime threat seriously
Only here for half day very sadly. Did the beagle channel catamaran $43 per adult, $21 for kids. A huge highlight, you get very close to the sea lions, cormorants etc, And the lighthouse at the end of the world, well worth it. Don't take the ship tour, just stroll off the boat and 1 minute away are the catamarans. Thereafter rushed to the martial glacier via taxi. Took the ski lift up for the fun of it, but can just as easily walk up for free, and avoid the long ski lift ticket queue. Nice views, and close to the snow up top! Wish we had more time to do town exploration, and market, but sadly had to dash back to the boat. A wonderful port and a must get off the ship stop
Charming towns near by,and a lovely lake, sadly misty so couldn't see the volcano. Got a taxi for $80 who took us all over for 5 hours, including up to the petrohue falls, well worth it.
Did a mad dash tour of santiago and vina del mar before hurrying to the airport to catch a three pm flight. Very glad we did, a fascinating town of major contrasts. Well worth making the effort to do a tour. Again don't need to get ripped off with the ships excursions, plenty of online recommendations for agents, not to mention willing taxi drivers at the port, but negotiate hard on price!!
