The 2 hour glacier trek was the highlight of our cruise. It was expensive but well worth it. My partner was worried about being able to go on a hike for 2 hours as he's not that active but it wasn't difficult at all. In fact, we both agreed that we could have spent at least another hour on the glacier. If you enjoy an adventure, I would highly recommend the glacier trek. I'm so glad we didn't just do the glacier walkabout as 30 min or even 1 hour would not be enough time. If you're going to spend the money, just spend a little more for the 2 or 3 hour trek. You will not regret it.
We rented a car and just drove on our own to the Yukon Territory in Canada. We bought a guide online and it told us scenic spots all along the drive. We saw several bears and the views were amazing. We split the cost with friends so it ended up being a very inexpensive excursion. I'm so glad we didn't book with a tour group as we passed several of them on the way and I would have hated riding in a bus with strangers. We like to spend as much or little time as we want along with way and the drive was super easy. We drove to Emerald Lake and then returned with plenty of time to still shop in Skagway.
We booked a zodiac adventure on our own because we wanted to make sure that the operator was the one that we read great reviews about online. It was a family run operation and the staff was extremely nice. The weather in Ketchikan that day was beautiful so it was not cold and the water was smooth. We say several eagles and other birds.
We decided to just walk into town. There was great signage and it only took about 30 min to walk to the Empress Hotel. Such a beautiful clean city. We had a great dinner downtown and then took a cab back to the ship.
