A true highlight. Flying through canyons, valleys and then landing on an isolated glacier ( pilot thought Mendenhall was too crowded). Hard to describe the sensations. Wished I had booked 2 trips back to back.
Off shore small boat tour with 5 others. Kent, the guide and skipper is a wildlife biologist. Articulate, friendly and very knowledgeable. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Spend a few hours with someone who truly knows and loves Alaska and its' wildlife.
Sitka is a fascinating town. I don't understand why every line but HAL has stopped going there.
The dock in Ketchikan is Cozumel in a plaid shirt and rain gear. Yet, a lot of ships stop there. Columbian emeralds and Tanzanite in Alaska? Best bet is to get out of town....way out of town in a seaplane or helicopter. Thats the opinion of shipmates who took to the air in Ketchikan.
VICTORIA is a gem of a city. Met cruise friends who live in Victoria and they gave us a tour of downtown and the harbor including the Water Taxis. Great seafood dinner with views of the Parliment building and waterfront. Active, happy crowds on a Saturday night. Superior to Seattle and Vancouver IMO.
Tip: Next cruise instead of going early and spending time in Seattle disembark in Victoria and stay a few days. You can get the high speed hydrofoil ferry back to Seattle....takes only 4 hours.
