We stayed one night at the Renaissance Vancouver Harbourside. This hotel has seen better days and we are somewhat surprised that Regent Seven Seas features this hotel in their pre and post-cruise lodging option. It is near the cruise port facility but there are certainly better hotels nearby that would be more appropriate to the Regent's luxury image. In any event, our stay at the Renaissance was comfortable and the service was excellent so we had no major complaints other than the hotel is dated and could use a major renovation. It was raining in Vancouver so we limited our activities to a stroll around the shopping areas near the hotel and a visit to the quaint and historical Gastown area.

After disembarkation from the Navigator, we decided to book the Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise on our own. We took the 8-1/2 hour cruise which included dinner on Fox Island and a visit to the The naturalist/narrator on our cruise was outstanding and knew when to talk to enlighten us and when not to talk to let us enjoy the sounds of wildlife and the calving of glaciers. During the tour we observed a number of sea otters, Dall purpoises, humpback whales, increasingly rare stellar sea lions and harbor seals. The bird life observed was extensive and included tufted and horned puffins, common murres and many others. The highlight of the tour included a stop at the Aialik tidewater glacier which provided an up close observation of glacier calving. It's hard to describe but you first hear the loud cracking of the ice and then almost instantly see the ice fall into the sea. It's quite an impressive and memorable experience.
