Santa Margherita Rating: 4.0 out of 5+

We booked the Portofino-Santa Margherita Ligure combo. I loved both places. We took a tender to Portofino, and then a walking tour of Portofino. It was no problem for us, but some of the people on the excursion were not prepared for the amount of stairs/uphill climbing that was involved. I recommend getting gelato from the super-hot gelato guys next door to the Louis Vuitton store!
We then took a ferry to SML, and ended up ditching our tour guide and exploring on our own once we knew the ferry and tender schedule. She was focused too much on detail of architecture on the buildings- we wanted to shop, eat, and explore!

The transportation was helpful and reliable, the guide on the bus offered a lot of info for people even though no one was taking an official tour.

Driving by landmarks on a bus is not what I had in mind.

Vatican Museums Rating: 4.0 out of 5+

Knowledgeable guide, very organized... though supremely crowded and HOT.

Taormina was one of my favorite places on this trip. The theater was a sight to behold, but the main streets were charming and the cannolis were sublime!

Mount Etna Rating: Not Rated

Well worth the expense- a great lunch was included and the volcano was amazing.

There is a shuttle from the ship to the terminal, and then we grabbed a taxi to the old town. They sure do hustle you trying to get you to take a tour of the island but we stuck to our guns and the 10 Euro fee that is usual. I think Regent should have arranged for more frequent shuttles from the terminal to the town and back. There was an MSC ship there, too, and they seemed to have a better schedule.

One of the most beautiful ports I've seen, the sail in is worth getting up for. Our ship is small so it could dock; I know bigger ships have to tender here. If one is physically fit, the hike up to the fort is very worth it. (Though finding the entrance is not well marked)

Easy shuttle transport from the ship directly to old town. Don't bother with the cabbies waiting outside. They tried to convince us we needed 2 cabs for our party of 5, so we waited 10 minutes and got a shuttle ride for free.
