La Romana (Casa de Campo)
We were supposed to take a taxi to Dreams La Romana and get a day pass. We were told by Dreams that it was a $20.00 - $30.00 cab ride. When we got to the taxi stand, we were told it would be $56.00 one way or $66.00 round trip. We said we would go with the round trip and then were told the taxi would wait for one hour and then we would have to return. When we said we planned on staying at least five hours, we were told to get a one way fare and we would be on our own for a ride back to the port. We asked if the price would be the same and were told and I quote, "That will be up to your driver."
We were with some other couples we met via our Cruise Critic roll call and they, like us, were not going to take the chance of being held hostage in the Dominican Republic over the price of a cab ride. So, we got back on the ship. The other couples tried to get a cab to a beach, but it was still the same deal. They ended up going back to the ship, also.
Those that took a $5.00 ride into town all had the same story. They said they were mobbed the minute they got off the shuttle and the locals would not leave them alone. They were all being harrassed to buy something. Every single person I talked to said they got back on the shuttle within 5 mintues and went back to the ship.
On the plus side, several large groups we met via our Cruise Critic roll call went on a tour through Seavis and had a great time, although they said it rained most of the day. Luckily, it did not rain in port.
Shopping by the port...pretty much non existent except for one duty free store that did not have much to offer.
