We got off the ship and found a couple of recliners on the beach. The beach filled up quickly and we had to hunt for some chairs in the shade. There is also a pool on the other side of Margaritaville. I think you can use the pool as well as the beach. Everyone I talked to that got food or drink at Margaritaville thought it was way overpriced.

There are a number of shops just off the ship if you want to do some shopping. If you have ever been to Carnival's private island, Grand Turk is similar.

A warning...We headed back to the ship just before 12:30 p.m. Soon after there was a very long line to get on the ship. One lady in front of us started throwing up and passed out from the heat. So, to review, don't wait too late to head back to the ship and be prepared for the heat while standing in line to get back on the ship.

We were supposed to take a taxi to Dreams La Romana and get a day pass. We were told by Dreams that it was a $20.00 - $30.00 cab ride. When we got to the taxi stand, we were told it would be $56.00 one way or $66.00 round trip. We said we would go with the round trip and then were told the taxi would wait for one hour and then we would have to return. When we said we planned on staying at least five hours, we were told to get a one way fare and we would be on our own for a ride back to the port. We asked if the price would be the same and were told and I quote, "That will be up to your driver."

We were with some other couples we met via our Cruise Critic roll call and they, like us, were not going to take the chance of being held hostage in the Dominican Republic over the price of a cab ride. So, we got back on the ship. The other couples tried to get a cab to a beach, but it was still the same deal. They ended up going back to the ship, also.

Those that took a $5.00 ride into town all had the same story. They said they were mobbed the minute they got off the shuttle and the locals would not leave them alone. They were all being harrassed to buy something. Every single person I talked to said they got back on the shuttle within 5 mintues and went back to the ship.

On the plus side, several large groups we met via our Cruise Critic roll call went on a tour through Seavis and had a great time, although they said it rained most of the day. Luckily, it did not rain in port.

Shopping by the port...pretty much non existent except for one duty free store that did not have much to offer.

We have been to Aruba before so we did not do a tour, although you can't

go wrong with an ABC or De Palms tour. Plus, you can book a tour through Carnival on the Kukooo Kunuku party bus to take you around the island for under $50.00.

The thing that struck me is it appeared the area around the port was on rough times. Carlos 'n Charlies which was the big hang out downtown is gone. One of the stores we enjoyed shopping at at the Royal Mall was gone and the place just seemed dead.

Having done the island tour before, I did not find it all that exciting, although the bus is fun if you do the Kukoo Kununku. I found the island to be a lot of cactus and kind of barren, not to mention the wind!
