It was a hot day in Key West and some of our group overslept and missed breakfast so we had a rough start to the day and it might have colored the entire experience. We had pre-purchased City View Trolley tickets online. There was a long wait in the hot sun for that first trolley pickup. Long. We had intended to take advantage of the on/off privilege, but after waiting for that first ride I was a bit nervous about getting off. We did stop at the Butterfly Conservatory which is near the Southernmost Point Cafe and beach area. We spent some time with the butterflies (beautiful) and then down at the beach (not as nice as what we would experience in the Bahamas, but not dirty by any means). It was pure luck that we got out of the water and caught the last trolley passing by the Conservatory. That time constraint hadn't been explicitly explained or we just weren't paying attention. When we got back to the first trolley stop we walked around a few stores and then headed back to the ship. The trolley worked for us because we weren't really sure what to do in Key West, but it wasn't a great excursion. I'd definitely do something else next time like rent a little cart and drive around myself or have a plan to do a very specific activity like the Aquarium or the Hemingway House and have other transportation options. The town itself seems very interesting.
Our party split up and booked two different excursions through the boat 'â,¬" the guys took the Jeep Tour and loved it. This included beach time and lunch. They brought back some great pictures. They also had the jeep to themselves (rather than sharing with 2 other people).
The ladies took the Kayak and Nature Experience and loved it. One guide stayed with us throughout the entire day from kayaking to walking to the beach to walking through the nature area and driving us back to the ship. Kayaking was fun, but don't expect breathtaking scenery just a unique nature experience. Several young kids were in our tour group and they were all okay with an adult in the back doing most of the work. I kayaked as a single and had no issues. Lunch included friendly and adorable raccoon visitors. The beach was gorgeous! Blue, shallow, calm water. Perfect for kids. A bit chilly in mid-April, but not enough to keep anyone out with a huge expanse of water area to spread out in. Highly recommend this tour. Might even do it again myself.
We booked the Dolphin Encounter at Blue Lagoon directly online. This was another wonderful day in the Bahamas. The Blue Lagoon is gorgeous, well laid out and not too touristy considering it really is just a tourist attraction. We enjoyed our time with the dolphin and there was plenty of beach area afterwards. Lunch & drinks were good too. Highly recommend the Blue Lagoon & the Dolphin Encounter. We did have a scheduling issue getting to the island. Our cruise documentation indicated we would be in port starting at 7am. We were in port ahead of this, but were unable to get off the ship until 7:30. We missed the first ferry over to the island and had to wait and check availability of the next ferry. The Blue Lagoon staff were very helpful, but there was some concern that we would miss our entire day because of this ship delay.
