Cozumel

Cozumel may have plenty of attractions, but the one you are most likely to experience is the shopping mall. If you have an urgent need to part with money, or just a desire to acquire emeralds, diamonds, gold or tasteless tourist junk, this will suit you just fine.

Rated as a 1 because the scale does not include a 0.

Another shopping mall! If you didn't spend enough money in Cozumel, you can part with more of your hard-earned cash here! You can get all the useless junk at the same ridiculous prices. Beer is expensive.

Tip: you get a great view of the harbour if you climb the pseudo-Mayan pyramid.

A typical working port, PL has seen better days. The infrastructure looked run down as did some of the equipment for handling containers. Mercifully few shops and NO malls or tourist traps! Be prepared for open drains and a certain tropical squalor that you can find anywhere.

Rated as a 3 because it is mercifully shop-free.

Another typical working port, Colon is much busier and less run-down than PL. Ship enthusiasts will love it, because there are dozens of ships 'waiting the roads'. We took a trip to Gatun Lock and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Rated as a 4 because it is mercifully shop-free and more interesting than PL.

We liked Cartagena! Interesting contrasts between old and new and amazingly clean. We did not see any litter nor any graffiti anywhere. We didn't take a tour because the trip we wanted was cancelled and we were left to our own devices.

Tip: taxis are very well organized and you should not have any trouble finding a driver who is willing to take you anywhere. The old fort is worth seeing. You have to negotiate another cruise port shopping mall to get to the taxis, but by now you are either broke or immune to the lure of shopping, so you should be able to resist.

Rated as a 5 because it is incredibly clean and the locals are friendly.

Clean, tidy, expensive are appropriate adjectives for GT. This was our second visit, so we decided to forego the Rum Cake Factory, Turtle Farm and Hell. If you haven't seen them, they are worth one visit at least (especially Hell).

We took a taxi to a public part of 7-Mile beach instead. The beach may be public, but the use of loungers and umbrellas is not - expect to pay $20 for each, but if you walk far enough you can sit under Cassowarina Pines for free.

There were 6 (six!) cruise ships in port on the day we visisted. Finding a taxi was not easy, but if you're willing to be patient someone will help.

Tip: not all taxis have air conditioning.

Rated as a 5 because it is incredibly clean and the locals are friendly.
