Cozumel
ATV Adventure Rating: 5+ out of 5+
The four in our party loved this. Lots of fun. First time for three of the four. The company offers both manual and automatic shift ATVs. The route was all on dirt roads with potholes, gutters and rocks - in other words tons of fun. You ride to a sink hole and then a cave. You get off the ATV, walk a short distance to the sites and your guide provides historic background. Informative and entertaining. At the conclusion of the ride you are offered some nachos and an opportunity to buy pictures and video they have taken. The images and movies are good. We didn't buy them because they were too highly priced. I would have paid $50 for the full CD but not what they were asking.

You are then taxied to a beach with lounge chairs, a restaurant and bar and souvenir shops. The prices are reasonable. No pressure to buy. Snorkel equipment is free to use. The pool is really just a little kid wading area. Beach is sandy, there is no coral formations close to beach but colorful fish can be seen. My best find was a small sting ray resting on the bottom.

Small groups are then taxied back to the dock as they wish to leave.

I really hoped to give this a better rating. The guides were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about the sea life in the area. The Cay is nice mix of rocks and coral. It's worth a visit if all you want to do is float on the surface.

I score this excursion low for two reasons. First, the life preservers are not the usual snorkel type that you inflate/deflate to swim down. These are like the preservers in your cabin, with foam. Try swimming down to get a closer look - it aint gonna happen. I took mine off, held the buckle end of the waist band and fought the tether to descend and take pictures. Very frustrating. I hated it. The tour operator, Hugh Parkey, should replace these with the type all the other snorkel operators use.

Second reason is after the swim they take you to their private island for an unabashed effort to get you to buy drinks, food and souvenirs. Not much to see on this island and they won't let you explore off the wooden paths. I would have much preferred to be returned directly to the ship to eat the food there.

Stingray Swim Rating: Not Rated
No rating given because the tour was cancelled. This is the second time this has happened to me at Grand Cayman. If you book this and the weather is iffy have a contingent plan in mind. Maybe a trip to one of the beaches, a museum tour or even a walk around downtown. Another factor on this island is that some ships are not allowed to come into the main bay. Instead, they are sent to a tiny sandy area where tenders drop off hundreds of people into a corral where they have to fight for taxis or even seating waiting for a tour to leave. Taxis are $5US per person. A real disappointment if your ship can't get into the main harbor. Plan for long waits in the afternoon when 1000's try to board a few tenders back to their ships. Stress levels probably high as the ship departure time rapidly approaches. Both times I've been to GC we were not allowed to tender at the downtown site. I am not impressed with Grand Cayman's treament of these ships to the alternate site as second class travelers. It's a rich island, they should do something to improve this site.
