Buenos Aires

Despite warnings, there were no issues about the Falklands. The lounge was fine, with shops and food outlets whilst waiting. The traffic on the surrounding roads was heavy, so I wouldn't recommend having less than 6 hours between arriving at the airport and having to board the ship.

A tender port with a lovely view from the ship. A warm welcome is assured. Plenty of gift shops and pubs right on the shoreline along with the Cathedral. Everyone was welcoming and the choice of tours for somewhere so small made it hard work to pick one. We could have stayed a week and not seen everything. It was a privilege to go there.

Expensive shops on the pier but if you get past them, there are many others that are much cheaper within 200 yards of the entrance. Burning tyres welcomed the ship as it had been to the Falklands, but there was no feeling of not being welcome.

The Beagle Channel tour started on the opposite side of the peir to the ship's berth, so it couldn't have been more convenient.

Nice scenery but not a lot in the town itself. A tender port fairly well organised.

Didn't see much of the port as we were on the first tender for our tour, and on the last tender back to ship! The tour to see Chilean Huesos was excellent as was the dining experience and the Pisco Sours!

Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera)
Cloud Forest National Park Rating: 5.0 out of 5+
A ride on the aerial tram which is basically a series of gondolas on a cable car run. At some points you were high above the ground, so not for the feint hearted! Followed by a typical Chilean buffet meal of beans, vegetables and chicken. Then a 30 minute tours of the gardens with local flora and fauna, and snakes (in glass fronted rooms).

Tarcoles River Rating: 5+ out of 5+
Open sided boats take around 30 passengers slowly along the river, stopping alongside basking crocodiles, allowing for clear, close photos. Many types of wading birds were also seen. The boat trip lasts two hours and is fascinating. Fruit and soft drinks were given out at the end.

San Juan
Port Rating: 4.0 out of 5+
Assuming this to be San Juan Del Sur in Nicaragua. A lovely little port, but it could only handle one tender at a time. This wasn't too bad when leaving the ship, but lead to long lines when everyone arrived back at the end of the afternoon.

The excursion to a market, a smouldering volcano and Granada was good value for money. The market traders were not intrusive, which cannot be said for the street children and beggars at Granada. Several people got annoyed by their persistence. The buffet meal was more than adequate and the guide was superb with his knowledge and his humour.

It is easy to see what attracts the rich and famous to this port. Plenty of cheap diamond shops for tax free purchases. Lots of trips being offered on the pier at reasonable prices. We saw whales close up on our tour, which rounded the whole trip off wonderfully.
