We opted for a day at Sapphire Beach on our own. The cab fare was $10 each way per person. There were 4 of us. The beach is gorgeous, sapphire blue color with the mountainous islands in the background. Beach chairs are $7. There is a beach bar and restrooms are available, too.
We took a walk to Basseterre. The highlight for us was seeing the Catholic church which is very quaint and has old charm. Our walk was nice, but we regretted not taking an excursion. It's a beautiful island to explore.
We got dropped off at Carlisle Bay. It was beautiful. We had loungers and a drink included. There was a beach bar with food available for purchase. We enjoyed the day very much.
Island Tour Rating:
We had a nice island tour on a open air 4x4 truck. We really enjoyed it. We stopped at Bathsheba for pictures and it was the highlight of the tour for me. It is beautiful there, with high surf and huge volcanic rocks in the water. Worth seeing. We saw sugar cane growing and being harvested. Our driver was great and really showed us around.
After our "official" excursion on the Fun Cats, our driver (Lindberg) offered to take us on an island tour for $10 per person. We stopped at a fruit stand and enjoyed fresh fruit of the islands. Yummy! We stopped for pictures in a couple spots, including seeing Trafalgar Falls from a distance. It was nice and well worth the $10. Our driver was great. We enjoyed him.
The Fun Cats were a disappointment. We entered the water at the beach but the beach was solid rocks, big, small, unstable. There was no man-made walkway or anything to allow us to walk more safely. The cats were battery operated but very slow. When we boarded our cats there was fresh wet bird poop on the seat of our cat. The crew member just looked at me until I finally sat in it. No napkin or even a splash of water to clean it a bit. We went across the bay for some very good snorkeling. The hard part was getting back on the cat because there was no ladder. There was a rope in the front to stand on but it was was unstable and difficult. The "crew" made no attempt to help people get back onto the cats.
We booked a catamaran snorkel tour on a beautiful boat called Mirabella. It was wonderful. There were only 23 people on board, roughly 25% of capacity, so there was plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy this incredible boat. The crew was very personable and attentive. There was a lady on board who was very sea sick. The crew was very attentive to her, doing everything possible to maintain her comfort. We were impressed. We snorkeled at one spot, which was just ok, then went to a beach at another spot. They used the dingy to take people to the beach who didn't want to get wet or couldn't swim. We were served drinks, snacks and sandwiches. It couldn't have been better. I didn't want the trip to end. It was perfect. We spent the afternoon walking around the boardwalk/shopping area on St Maarten. There have been some nice changes since we were there last. It has never looked better. It's very clean and charming.
