We docked in Mahogany Bay, so we got off the boat and walked right to the beach. Don't pay for the chairlift, it's literally a 5-10 minute walk to the beach from the boat. Prices on the beach for some equipment are high, so bring your own goggles/snorkel if you want. Water is fairly shallow all the way out to the "limit" of the swimming area, saw lots of fish and such (don't forget under the pier on the other end of the beach). Shops are ok here, plenty of the same ones you see everywhere in the Caribbean. Next time maybe we'll try something else, but the beach is always nice.

Weather was chilly and windy, we didn't end up doing anything in Belize City, went back to the boat and enjoyed the quiet and empty boat. The city itself is not great, shops aren't anything special. If you don't book an excursion, get a water taxi to one of the cayes and spend time on the beach or in the water.

Previously we've taken a taxi to Paradise Beach and also a Jeep excursion touring the island. Forget those. This time we rented a car (right there in the terminal), it was $56 for the whole day (including tax and insurance), about what it might cost you for a taxi to/from some of the beaches. We drove around the whole island, stopped at several beaches/shops/etc. You can go to all the same spots that several excursions go to, Mayan ruins, crocodile area, lighthouse, beaches, but for a lot less. The island is super easy to get around, there's really only one road. Had a good time with it, get a convertible :)
